The keyless system doesn’t work at all, I confirm it’s a step backward. A key with a button is much better.
Wrong! And if your car's like that take it back and get it mended.
My car works fine, let's say 95% of the time. OK it's not perfection but 95% of the time the car unlocks when I approach it from either side of the car without me having to touch the handle first. OK it doesn't if you approach the car directly from behind, wanting to go in the boot, but it does if you simply stand at the rear corner.
And it ALWAYS locks itself when I leave normally - it hasn't just twice and that turned out to be a door not completely closed.

Like Gloucester, mine works perfectly, I would say 99% of the time. The fact that it doesn't work when you come from behind, trying to be positive, excites me with the idea that it detects your position near the trunk and that perhaps, one day, they will include the functionality that Teslas have, where if you stop in front of the trunk, it warns you with beeps and if you do nothing, the trunk opens automatically. I would love that.

I too find keyless entry almost flawless. In fact, I find that trunk and charging cable will unlock when in proximity shortly followed by the doors. Locking with sound confirmation is essential as mentioned previously, an partially open door will prevent locking.
Not particularly flawless with our car and we always approach it side on at the driver's door. Sometimes it opens as you approach, sometimes not. But a quick pull of the handle seems to do it. Our main issue is that the car does not always connect up to Apple CarPlay or even Google Assistant although the latter seems to wake up and kick in within the first 1-2 minutes. The CarPlay only if the car is stopped, turned off and then re-started again after a short journey.
Still finding the software glitchy.

In 8 months of ownership, the car has never failed to open for her fob as she approaches (and if she is at home she usually approaches from the rear). She has never had to pull on the driver's door handle even once.

Definitely the worst thing about the car. So frustrating without a lock/unlock button on the fob. I’m disabled but do all of the driving, so I get into my wheelchair and my wife pushes me a distance from the car when we realise we’ve forgotten something. Why on earth can’t I just unlock the car for her so she can nip back to the car without having to remember to take my fob. Just like every car I’ve had for the past twenty years. Definitely form over function
It a much more secure locking/unlocking system which cannot be hacked or 'relayed'.
The reason the fob doesn't have a button is that the fob does not lock or unlock the car, and so a button could not do anything.
All the fob does is - in a very secure manner - allow the car to calculate the distance between the car and the fob. Nothing else.
The car then does all the work. The car unlocks itself when it detects the fob is close enough. Then the car locks itself when the fob moves too far away.
Very secure. Not always very convenient.

That's very helpful SP - thanks. I must admit that I do find it a pain in the seat when I'm standing in drizzle or Mrs OM can't get in while I lock the front door, but knowing that it is more secure is pleasing.
We have got used to unlocking it using the app to let the kids in before locking the house up. Not super convenient but works. Could do with it not being so keen to re-lock when passengers are in. But the kids have learnt to unlock it again from inside to stop the alarm sounding.
Given all the poor press regarding relay car theft it is good to see Volvo putting some effort in to making this much harder but the usability could do with some finessing.
I wonder if they have ever thought of using the digital key technology available on some smart phones. That sounds a good idea.
The car is compatible with the Digital Key technology and it is supposed to be included.
It wasn't available at the time of the car's release and so the key fob was given as a temporary free alternative (Plus and Ultra) only until Digital Key is released. Once Digital Key is released, the key fob will revert to the planned and originally advertised £150 optional extra.
It would appear that Digital Key is not yet available for Volvo's because Apple have not yet authorised Volvo to use the technology on Apple phones.
Volvo vould have released it for Android but have chosen to wait until they can write the software for both at the same time.
A case of Volvo discriminating against Android users because of Apple's tardiness.
When it comes, all phones should operate the same as the key card - nothing more than that. Direct contact between phone and the driver's door pillar will still be required.
Plus and Ultra models will have access to Digital Key Plus technology if the owner has a high end phone with UWB installed. In that case the phone will act in exactly the same way as the key fob does, using exactly the sane technology. It may also have exactly the same issues for those users who find the key fob doesn't work as it should (possibly because of outside RF interference).
